When writing about future earnings, be careful about "dilution," referring to the potential increase in the number of outstanding shares if rights associated with convertible bonds (convertible into shares) and other derivatives, or stock options, are exercised. Analyst reports routinely deal with this but even in the financial press it often is overlooked.
